Awkwardly Social

Denham Audio

In a blizzard of breakbeats, b-lines and acid hooks, Denham Audio has brought new urgency and vitality to the modern rave scene. The sound he’s pushing is rooted in the legacy of UK hardcore, but those foundational sounds and styles are given a thorough spruce up, feeding into the buoyant areas of exploration happening between 140 and 160 BPM. Releases have been coming thick and fast, from early outings on Nineteen Ninety Four and Artifice through to a blistering run on WNCL, Frendzone! (alongside Violet), Lobster Theremin, Sneaker Social Club and more. Across these 12”s you can hear every shred of influence spilling out – from the upfront hardcore and jungle through to hip hop and reggae, and beyond the confines of music into sci-fi and anime.

As well as a relentless charge of rave-ready EPs and DJ sets spanning the UK and as far as Seoul, Tokyo, Berlin, New York and elsewhere, the Denham Audio pressure also piles into the Club Glow collective. Alongside Borai, LMajor and Mani Festo, Denham is presenting a communal front which first manifested as a tape series and now spans 12” drops, a monthly session on Balamii Radio and coordinated blitzes on appropriately sized dancehalls. It’s a natural extension of Denham’s production endeavours, succinctly captured on the SNKRX05 12” as “16v hatchback breakbeat NRG kickin’ it out of your Kenwood system.” We couldn’t have put it better ourselves.

Ben Sleia

After years spent in dinghy warehouses and clubs, Ben Sleia’s got a raver’s sensibility and an intuitive touch of what it takes to make a crowd feel. Following regular sets at Liverpool institution 24 Kitchen Street, as well as residencies on community radio stations Melodic Distraction Radio and now Refuge Worldwide in Berlin with her show Bruits, she caught the eye of curators at FOLD, Daisychain, Lobster Theremin, and contributed mixes to all series. She regularly plays in the UK and in Berlin, where she is based, showcasing a sound on the tastefully harsh left side, with a bent for the UK-centric: techno, electro, breaks, dubstep, hardcore, and jungle.

Cheng NWSH

CHENG NWSH is a resident DJ and founding member of Awkwardly Social, a community spirited dance music collective from Berlin. With his razor sharp blends and high energy selections, he quickly made a name for himself in the local club scene, regularly playing at venues such as ://about blank, OHM, Paloma and others. Originally hailing from China, he can also look at an impressive run of gigs in his native country, having performed in some key venues like All Club, Dada or Elevator and featuring on line-ups alongside international stars of the touring circuit such as Barker, Simo Cell and Pariah. Make sure to catch one of his many appearances on HÖR or THF Radio, where you can witness him aptly showcasing the signature NWSH choppy yet super tight mixing of records from his vast vinyl collection. Like no other, Cheng knows how to combine his love for emotional moments of old school rave euphoria with cutting edge halftime steppers, futuristic jungle techno and other styles that, very much in the essence of his approach to DJing, defy being pigeonholed into any genre category.
