Jon Hester

(Rekids | Klockworks | Deeply Rooted | Dystopian | Transmat | LET | Afterlife) / Berlin

Jon Hester is a Midwest American DJ, producer, and dancer known for his physical rhythms and adventurous programming, effortlessly combining diverse varieties of techno and house. With an engaging presence and a knack for telling a story, he builds a unique connection with each audience, and works any room until it sweats. His beginnings solidified foundational connections to music and the ritual of the dance. Playing the clarinet and saxophone as a child, classical and jazz training opened the doors to music theory, performance, and improvisation. Formative years in Chicago brought house mixes to his ears via radio waves by age fifteen. Following a mind-expanding trip to London in 1996, he dove into a wider world of music, and sparked a connection with sounds emanating from Detroit. Soon after he was going out dancing at every opportunity, and ultimately it was the boundless nature of techno that pushed him to dig deeper. After years on the dance floor, he made a natural progression to DJing in 1999. Relocating to Minneapolis in 2000, he found himself in an under-the-radar haven for Midwest parties, and he eventually ran his own club night, Convergence. As the resident DJ, he was booking guests including Daniel Bell and Ryan Elliott, while also providing a platform for local talents like DVS1 and Dustin Zahn. To keep his record collection fresh, he spent Saturdays working behind the counter of Vital Vinyl, the only strictly dance music-focused record shop in Minneapolis. As his focus shifted to production, he found a new home in Berlin. It was here that he crafted EPs for his EDEC label with Andrew Grant, and his breakout Interstellar Systems EP on Rødhåd’s Dystopian imprint. This brought his sound into the vernacular of techno heavyweights and wider audiences by 2016, with subsequent music out on Ben Klock’s Klockworks, Radio Slave’s Rekids Special Projects, DJ Deep’s Deeply Rooted label, Transmat, LET Recordings, and Afterlife. Meanwhile, his remix portfolio started to grow across labels including Odd/Even, Steinlach, Sungate, and Eternal Friction. In 2020 and 2021, he released his first full length album in two parts on the flagship Rekids label to critical and popular acclaim. This marked a new milestone for Hester branching out to explore new sonic realms in a longer format, while maintaining his focus on the groove and the dance floor. His DJ skills have moved dancers around the world, in venues such as Berghain and Tresor Berlin, Rex Club and Concrete Paris, fabric London, Trouw and Shelter Amsterdam, Dude Club Milan, Space and Hï Ibiza, Output New York, Crobar Buenos Aires, D-Edge São Paulo, Bar Americas Guadalajara, B018 and The Grand Factory Beirut, Faust Seoul, and Vent Tokyo. Hester’s enthusiasm and steady grind ensure that his star will continue to rise.

Perm B2B Wice

Perm (Shtum | Kann | LACKREC.) / Leipzig

Perm was a resident DJ at IFZ until early 2022 and has been a DJ and producer for more than ten years. His sound varies from moody, trippy numbers to uplifting, chord-heavy beats. All done with a fine, distinctive, and reduced signature. His discography features numerous releases, issued on labels such as the Leipzig imprint Kann, Shtum or Lackreck. As a DJ and live act, he has toured nationally and internationally (Boiler Room, India tour and so on). As a person, he is just charming and likeable. Whoever lives in Leipzig, was a guest at IFZ, listened to Perm at one of his gigs or heard his releases, knows beyond doubt what he’s got up his sleeve. No more words needed.

Wice (Be As One | Wolfskuil | Steinlach/Weisse Elster | RLSD) / Leipzig After

After the first transitions were played in 2008 and the first steps in music production were taken in 2009, Wice developed an unprecedented love for sound, polyrhythm and frequency. More and more it turned out – retrospectively – that this sonic relationship was the perfect means for Wice to subjectively channel his innermost, to introspectively surrender to sound and texture, and to work towards the eventual moment at which he could say: ‘Cool, now I finally have the technical means to externalize all that doesn’t want to be said, merely through frequencies.’ Driven by the insight that there always will be more steps to climb, Wice had to acknowledge that this kind of music will accompany him for a lifetime. In 2017 he finally decided to start his own label ‘Steinlach’ with his good friend Ingo and Wice’s first solo record ‘Hedonism’ was released. Although achieving international success with this release had not been the intended goal, things fortunately turned out differently: Throughout 2017, the track ‘Just Kiddin” was played almost every weekend in well-known clubs and at reputable festivals around the world. With it, Wice even won a golden ‘Raving Spoon’ in the category ‘The Perfect Tracks’. Further releases on Shlomi Aber’s ‘Be As One’, Darko Essers/Tripeo’s ‘Wolfskuil’, Deepa’ and Biri’s ‘Black Crow’ as well as on the in-house label Steinlach followed. The affiliated digital-only sublabel ‘Weisse Elster’ was launched in 2021 with the EP ‘Ape Layers’. WEL002 (‘Seragard’) followed in March 2022. CAT No.003 & 004 are already scheduled for this years late summer respectively winter.

WEL_L, the event series closely interwoven with the Leipzig based ‘Steinlach’ sub-label ‘Weisse Elster’, stands for a seemingly never-ending well full of ‘sonic-adventures’. The nights focus on sophisticated techno music characterized by an inescapable groove, meant to offer people of all backgrounds, sexual orientations, and denominations the opportunity to dive into transcendental spheres together and to share a liminal experience. Headlining, name-dropping and hard, inharmonious cuts between the individual sets are deliberately avoided, giving both the artists and the crowd the necessary space for personal development. WEL_L wants you to savor the moment in its richness and to simply drift in the here and now. True to the credo: ‘If people dance non stop for 8 hours, these people are enjoying the moment in its entirety for 8 hours – without having any time to mess up’. Let’s overcome time and space together. Let’s dance for an egalitarian future filled with frequencies that are fueled with love and mindfulness. ——— Doors: 23.00 ——— Your ticket will be send to you via email right after your purchase.
